Mixed Media Project:
Students created individual color pattern and shape style portraits inspired by
the American Artist, Chuck Close“Alex II” on exhibit in the Toledo Museum of Art.
Students will create a test strip using 8x11 paper, creating a grid on the entire paper. Students will use color pencils, watercolors or markers to make patterns using color, line and shape to repeat throughout entire page as a warm up exercise. Given a photograph of themselves and working step by step with a grid layout, students will trace and transfer their photographs onto drawing paper or watercolor paper to create a Chuck Close style self portrait drawing. Student’s will uses elements of art of color, lines, shapes and principles of design to include repetition and pattern. Students will implement contrast, complementary colors and overall balance to create their Close style portraits.
