The teacher explained about abstract art. She pointed out the individual shapes and solid colors students could recognize. The 5 shape, cone shapes, cylinder shapes. She pointed out how the forms and shapes overlapped each other and combined together complete a whole art piece.
SUBJECT: Mixed media art project. Students will draw sketches in their sketchbooks of artwork that inspires them resembling the artwork they chose. Students were also encouraged to use a combination of ideas from multiple artworks to create new patterns for their stained glass windows. Students will then use their drawings as a guide pattern for their glass windows in the classroom. SUPPLIES: 4 x 4 pre-cut glass with colored masking tape around all edges for safety, pencil and sketchbooks to draw in the gallery, colored pencils, sharpie markers. Supply classes for 1 classes of 25-30 students per class. OBJECTIVES: Students will utilize craftsmanship skills working with tracing patterns. Students will also use higher cognitive skills by listening to directions and suggestions to visualize the artwork they sketched in the gallery. Student’s will uses elements of art with color, lines and shape, forms and principles of design to include balance, repetition, pattern, contrast, unity and emphasis -Content Statement From the Ohio Department of Education 2012 Visual Art Standards: 5th grade 1 1PE: Understand that the context of an art object has an effect on how that object is perceived. 2 2PE: Identify and communicate how historical and cultural contexts influence ideas that inform artists. 3 3PE: Investigate the role of cultural objects in our everyday environment. 4 4PE: Compare and contrast how form and style are influenced by social, environmental and political views in artworks. 5 5PE: Focus attention on selected artworks to identify and pose questions about aesthetic qualities (e.g., sensory, organizational, emotional) in the works. 6 4PR: Select and use the elements and principles of art and design to communicate understanding of an interdisciplinary concept. -State Standards in Other Disciplines 1 Science Standards Physical Standards: a. Mathematics Standards Geometry and Spatial Sense b. Identify, classify, compare and analyze characteristics, properties and relationships of one, two, and three dimensional figures and objects. Use of spatial reasoning, properties of geometric objects and transformations to analyze and solve problems. LEARNER OUTCOMES: Students will be able to draw smaller version of artworks chosen in the art gallery. Students will use drawing supplies to crate their patterns, contour lines and color mixing. Students learn a better understanding of art elements including shape line color and form as well as principles of design including balance, emphasis and pattern. PROCEDURE: 1) Introduction: Motivation, Take students to the art gallery to show them the exhibit. Students will sketch patterns they chose from the artworks in the contemporary gallery. Remind students of the gallery rules and explain they will see nude statue figures and to maintain a mature attitude because other people have paid to see the exhibit and appreciate respectful behaviors. 2) Use 4 x 4 taped glass and have students put their name and class code on the taped sides. 3) Have students trace the outline edges of the glass on a sheet of paper. |

4) Have students trace their patterns within the 4 x 4 space.
4) Once patterns are traced, have the students place the glass on top of their traced patterns and use colored pencils to retrace the patterns onto the glass.
6) Next have the students color in their patterns
7) The final step is to trace the outlines of their patterns with sharpie to bring out the contour lines in the patterns.
