Fourth Grade Native American Shields
![]() In Native American Culture, The wheel is symbolic of "the never-ending cycle of life." It has no beginning and no end. Tribal healers and holy men have regarded the wheel as sacred and have always used it in their ceremonies. Its significance enhanced the embodiment of healing ceremonies. Shields are protectors for warriors in times of bad weather and war.
Students will create a medicine wheel or shield with Native American symbols and colors. Students will work with art elements of color and principles of design by using pattern and repetition. Students will utilize craftsmanship skills by working with paper, drawing Native American symbols with oil pastels. Students will use scissors to cut their shields, work with a hole puncher and thread yarn around their symbols. Students will show higher cognitive skills by learning what the symbols represent and learn how colors have specific meanings. They will choose their symbols and colors and draw details in their chosen symbols. Students will work with art elements of color, line, shape and principles of design by using pattern and repetition |
